Additional Information

Springburn Castle: It"s not often we write about a private house, but there aren"t many houses like "Springburn Castle".
In the early 19th century, before the coming of the railways, Springburn was little more than a few cottages, surrounded by open farmland. The posh folk of the area lived in fine villas on the brow Balgrayhill – at 364 feet above sea level, the highest point in Glasgow.
Balgray Tower, Breeze"s Tower or Duncan"s Tower, in Broomfield Road, is the only survivor of these villas.
The single-story property was built c1820 by David Hamilton for local landowner Moses McCulloch. The tower was added in 1830, when the property was bought by a Captain Breeze, the owner of a successful fleet of tea clippers.
Local legend has it that he built the tower so, with the aid of his spy glass, he could watch his ships arrive and depart the River Clyde.
The building is such a local landmark that it features in the crest for next doors Springburn Bowling Club. And who knows how many local weans have been left trembling and weak at the knees with all the ghost stories that surround the Gothic-style building. I certainly wouldn"t want to walk past it on a dark and stormy night!
There"s supposed to be two resident spirits; one the ghost of a maid who died in the tower, the other apparition that of a lady in a long green dress, carrying a small pet dog.
